Chile has opted for a system that combines merit and political considerations in the selection of the Senior Public Officers, which isregulated by Law 19,833, on New Labor Deal that creates and regulates the Senior Public
Management System (Sistema de Alta Dirección Pública or SADP)) This model is based on a selection process operating on the basis of a profile, serves as the basis for the recruitment process involving private consultants, responsible for ensuring the appropriate technical level for the responsibilities outlined in a profile. This model has been extended to other areas public administration, as it is seen as an appropriate way to recruit in the public service. Considering this background, this document analyzes the role of SADP in the field of municipal education, addressing the
main characteristics of the process of recruitment and selection, progress made in the selection of DAEM Chiefs and Directors. Additionally some advantages and potential of the new system in thefield of education are presented. Finally, challenges and opportunities are presented for
improving the SADP in the field of education at the local level.
