Sensory processing of children with autistic spectrum disorder: Emphasis on sensory systems

Authors

Abstract

Currently Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is considered a disorder of the development of neurobiological causes, which is characterized by difficulty in social interaction, communication and behavior. The difficulty of children with ASD to adapt to different types of environments may be related to deficits in sensory processing. The aim of this study was to analyze the IS profile of children with ASD. The research was carried out in a Specialized Rehabilitation Center and about 11 children with ASD participated. For data collection, the scalar evaluation of the child’s Sensory Profile 2 was used. The results of this study identified that children with ASD showed significant sensory changes in the tactile, auditory, movement, oral and visual systems. We conclude that this study contributed to investigate the processing of sensory information in children with ASD, and that it was possible to identify that they are susceptible to changes in sensory processing. However, further studies in the area are needed.
