Abstract

The notion of masculinity has been constantly the subject of discussion in recent years due to the deconstruction of generic paradigms that were supposed to be rigid and invariable. Thus, broadening the definition of the singular term masculinity to a plurality of masculinities implies considering gender as a process of social construction in which ethnic, economic, political and cultural aspects intervene. From this perspective, the following article analyzes the process of construction of masculinity in the marginal socio-political context present in the literary work El Río by Alfredo Gómez Morel (1962). To do this, it will be examined the transition between male identification and the process of gender subjectivation that is narrated in the novel, paying special attention to the variants that constitute the lumpen code such as body, hierarchy, domination, among others. The reading proposal, in this aspect, seeks to make visible the multiple heterogeneous masculinities that arise in El Río.
